Docker is used by Data to Science (D2S) to deploy each application that makes up the D2S platform in an isolated environment known as a container. The version of D2S we will be working with today uses eight containers. Today, we will be building two of these containers locally and using remote repositories for the remaining containers. A deeper dive into Docker containers can be found here.

Terminology

  • Docker Desktop - User-friendly desktop application for managing Docker containers.

  • Docker Engine - Tool for building and running Docker containers.

  • Docker Compose - Tool for describing and running multi-container applications from a single config file.

  • Dockerfile - A file containing instructions for building a Docker image.

  • Docker image - Blueprint for creating a Docker container.

  • Container - An instance of a image. A self-contained and portable environment that contains application code, libraries, and the settings required to run an application.
